The Problem:
Air Pollution and Accessibility
Air pollution significantly impacts health, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma. The rising pollution levels necessitate the use of air purifiers to ensure cleaner air indoors. However, the high cost of commercial air purifiers puts them out of reach for many, especially those who suffer the most from poor air quality. This project aims to address the need for an affordable air purifier made from simple, eco-friendly materials to improve air quality and accessibility for everyone.

The Solution:
Eco-Friendly Air Purifier Design
The proposed air purifier utilizes easily accessible materials such as wooden containers, coir or cane filters, and antibacterial coatings derived from plant extracts. By incorporating a recycled box fan or creating a homemade fan with wood and a motor, the design maintains cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness. The filter leverages the natural properties of coir fibers, which are thick and contain lignin, making them suitable for air and water purification. The antibacterial layer, synthesized from plant-based nanoparticles, prevents the growth of harmful bacteria and germs, enhancing the purifier's efficacy.

Implementation and Challenges
Constructing the prototype involved multiple iterations and adjustments to ensure an airtight fit and effective air filtration. The major challenge was creating a precise wooden frame to house the square fan and filter securely. Additionally, testing the filter's efficiency proved difficult, yielding qualitative rather than quantitative results. Despite these setbacks, the project underscored the importance of meticulous planning and adaptability. The support from mentors and the design team was crucial in overcoming obstacles and successfully developing the prototype. This project highlights the potential for affordable, sustainable solutions to improve air quality for a broader population.
